General description

Benzylmagnesium chloride is a versatile Grignard reagent frequently used in organic synthesis. It can be used as a reagent in the addition reaction with carbonyl compounds, nitriles, epoxides, and alkyl halides to synthesize various alcohols, amines, and ketones. Additionally, it is also used in reductions, cross-coupling, allylation and alkylation reactions.

Application

Benzylmagnesium chloride solution (1.0 M in diethyl ether) is used as a reagent to provide the benzyl group required for the synthesis of the desired sulfonic acid-functionalized alkoxysilane. It is also used in the anionic polymerization of styrene to form styrenyl magnesium chloride, which is further used as an initiator in the synthesis of polyolefin-block-polystyrene block copolymers.
