General description

Gold nanoparticles are extensively used as preferred materials for labeling, imaging, sensing, and biomedical applications due to their following unique properties:
  • Ease of synthetic manipulation
  • Strong binding affinity to thiols, disulfides, and amines
  • Unique tunable optical and distinct electronic properties
  • High X-ray absorption coefficient

Application

Gold nanoparticles can be used:
  • As a catalyst in the preparation of single-walled carbon nanotubes by a chemical vapor deposition method.
  • In the preparation of conducting polymer matrix AuNPs/PEDOT: PSS(poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate), which is applicable in fuel cell electrocatalysis.
  • To prepare fluorescent nanocomposites for targeted bioimaging.
  • As carriers of signaling antibody in developing optical ELISA for analysis of breast cancer biomarker.

Small-scale materials with particle diameters in the nanometer range have already been used for a long time. The Chinese used carbon black, derived from a combustion process for painting applications a long time before modern technology allowed its industrial production.

Steven J. Oldenburg, Ph.D. provides an overview of lateral flow diagnostic assays and discusses the use of ultra-bright reporter particles based on the unique optical properties of gold nanoshells that significantly increase the sensitivity of lateral flow immunoassays.

Sustainable, environment-friendly, and clean energy sources with sufficiently high production efficiency for practical application are highly desirable to meet the energy challenge of the 21st century due to the world′s increasing energy demand.

Gold (Au) nanoparticles have tunable optical and electronic properties and are used in a number of applications including photovoltaics, sensors, drug delivery & catalysis.
