General description

SUN domain-containing protein 1 (SUN1), also known as Protein unc-84 homolog A or Sad1/unc-84 protein like 1 (UNC84A), is a component of the SUN-protein-containing complexes also called LINC (linker of nucleoskeleton and cytoskeleton) complexes. These complexes link the nucleoskeleton and cytoskeleton structures together in a scaffold like fashion. SUN1 is required for interkinetic nuclear migration and nucleokinesis as well as nucleus-centrosome coupling during radial neuronal migration and glial migration in the cortex. SUN1 also is important during meiosis and is required for proper gametogenesis as well. Additionally, SUN1 it is important in the distribution of nuclear pore complexes on the nuclear membrane. Interestingly, LINC complexes are also critical for vital functions such as hearing. For instance, recent research demonstrates that the position of the nucleus in sensory epithelial cells, partly governed by SUN1, appears critical for normal hearing.

Immunogen
