General description
Tumor necrosis factor ligand superfamily member 13 (UniProt: Q9D777; also known as A proliferation-inducing ligand; APRIL; CD256) is encoded by the Tnfsf13 (also known as APRIL) gene (Gene ID: 69583) in mouse. APRIL is a secreted cytokine of the tumor necrosis family and is present in T cells, B cells, dendritic cells, monocytes, and macrophages. April exists as a functional homotrimer, but can form functional heterotrimers with B cell activating factor (BAFF). APRIL stimulates T and B cell proliferation and it exerts T and B cell regulatory effects by binding to TNFRSF17 (BCMA) and TNFRSF13B (TACI) receptors. It is also involved in monocyte/macrophage-mediated immunological processes. It also plays a role in the regulation of tumor cell growth and can induce apoptosis through its interaction with other TNF receptor family proteins such as TNFRSF6/FAS and TNFRSF14/HVEM. APRIL can serve as as a potential biomarker and its serum levels are shown to be elevated for certain cancers and expression levels elevated in cancer tissues.
