General description

Pyronin Y (C.I. 45005) is an aminoxanthene dye that is present as a weakly lipophilic cation in neutral aqueous solutions. It is also known as pyronine G.

Application

Pyronin Y is commonly used in histology as a constituent of the ethyl (methyl) green-pyronine method for demonstrating DNA and RNA. It is known as a nucleic acid stain for both RNA and DNA. Additionally, it is suitable for other microscopic applications including demonstration of lipofuscin in neurons and simultaneous fixation and staining of phospholipids.

Suitability

Certified for use in the methyl green-pyronin method for differential staining of nucleic acids.
