General description

GCDFP-15 is a 15 kD glycoprotein which is localized in the apocrine metaplastic epithelium lining breast cysts and in apocrine glands in the axilla, vulva, eyelid, ear canal, and in salivary glands. Approximately 70% of breast carcinomas are labeled with antibody to GCDFP-15. Colorectal carcinomas, lung carcinoma, mesothelimas rarely stain with this antibody. Because of its specificity for breast carcinoma (up to 99%), this antibody is often used in a screening panel in the appropriate clinical situation, often for a woman with metastasis of unknown primary.

For accurate classification of cutaneous metastatic carcinoma, reliable tumor-specific immunohistochemical markers would be valuable. GCDFP-15, a glycoprotein identified in the cyst fluid of cystic breast disease, is considered to be a marker of apocrine differentiation. Studies on GCDFP-15 localization in adult normal tissues are lacking, and no information on GCDFP-15 expression during fetal development

The identification of metastatic carcinoma of the breast may be difficult in the absence of a previous history of breast cancer. Various immunophenotypic markers have been introduced to aid in this process. A monoclonal antibody directed at a 15-kilodalton (kd)
