General description

Anti-cytokeratin (OSCAR) is well-suited to distinguish epithelial carcinoma from non-epithelial malignancies and is used to aid epithelial tumor classification. This antibody has been used to characterize the source of various neoplasms and to study the distribution of keratin containing cells in epithelia during normal development and during the development of epithelial neoplasms. This antibody stains cytokeratins present in normal and abnormal human tissues and has shown high sensitivity in the recognition of epithelial cells and carcinomas.

Spindle cell carcinoma (SpCC) is uncommon, with a predilection for the upper aerodigestive tract. Its histogenesis has not been resolved, although most authors support the sarcomatoid carcinoma concept. Ploidy analysis and proliferation indices have not been reported for laryngeal SpCCs.

Intermediate filaments (IFs) of the cytokeratin (CK) type are cytoskeletal elements typical for epithelial differentiation. However, in diverse transformed culture lines of non-epithelial origin, rare cells emerge spontaneously, which synthesize, in addition to their vimentin IFs, CKs 8 and 18.
