General description

Immunolabelling of neurofilaments (NF) is employed for study of nerve distribution of normal and abnormal tissues, and neuronal differentiation of neoplasms. NF are found in neuromas, ganglioneuromas, gangliogliomas, ganglioneuroblastomas, neuroblastomas, and retinoblastomas. Neurofilaments are also present in paragangliomas, as well as, adrenal and extra-adrenal pheochromocytomas. Carcinoids, neuroendocrine carcinomas of the skin, and lung small cell carcinoma also express neurofilament.1-5

Twelve cases of gastrointestinal neuroendocrine tumors, including eight carcinoids and four pancreatic islet cell tumors or their metastases, were immunohistochemically analyzed for the expression of different types of intermediate filament proteins. All of the tumors showed cytokeratin positivity in immunostaining

The diagnosis and evaluation of neoplasms of the central nervous system frequently involves the use of immunohistochemical stains. This article reviews some of the more commonly used markers including glial fibrillary acidic protein, synaptophysin, neurofilament protein, S-100 protein, epithelial membrane
