General description

CA-125 (cancer antigen 125) is a large transmembrane glycoprotein belonging to the mucin family, encoded by the gene MUC16. By immunohistochemistry, CA-125 expression is not identified in normal ovarian tissue, but it is found in the normal cervix, fallopian tube, and endometrium. Positive immunostaining for CA-125 is seen in most ovarian carcinomas and epithelioid mesotheliomas.
Anti-CA-125 antibody reacts with epithelioid malignancies of the ovary, papillary serous carcinoma of the cervix, adenocarcinoma of the endometrium, clear cell adenocarcinoma of the bladder, and epithelioid mesothelioma. The antigen is formalin resistant, permitting the detection of ovarian cancer by immunohistochemistry, although serum assays for this protein are widely used to monitor ovarian cancer. Anti-CA-125 also reacts with antigens in seminal vesicle carcinoma.

OC125, a murine monoclonal antibody, recognizes an antigenic determinant (CA125) that is associated with greater than 80% of epithelial ovarian neoplasms of serous, endometrioid, clear cell, and undifferentiated types. In the present report, a sensitive biotin-avidin immunoperoxidase technique was used
