General description

Sodium carbonate is also termed as soda ash. Solvay process uses sodium chloride and limestone to produce sodium carbonate.

Application

Sodium carbonate has been used as a component in BG11 liquid media for cyanobacterial growth and in G625 growth medium for Anabaena flos-aquae. It has also been used to impregnate mixed-cellulose ester (MCE) filter.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Sodium carbonate helps to improve the pretreatment of rice straw and develops delignification process.
Buffer component, may be used for the removal of peripheral membrane proteins.

Other Notes

Salt component in the fractionation of multivalent nucleotides by inorganic salt co-precipitation
