Application

N-Acetyl-D-sphingosine is a cell-permeable and biologically active ceramide. N-Acetyl-D-sphingosine induces differentiation and apoptosis in cells. N-Acetyl-D-sphingosine produces concentration-dependent impairment of vasorelaxation in response to the endothelium-dependent agonist acetylcholine in nontransgenic mice.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Cell-permeable, biologically active ceramide. It induces differentiation and apoptosis in cells and has been shown to activate protein phosphatases.

Preparation Note

Prepared from D-sphingosine from bovine brain cerebrosides.

Ceramide is a sphingolipid which regulates a variety of signaling pathways in eukaryotic cells. Exogenous ceramide has been shown to induce cellular apoptosis. In this study, we observed that exogenous ceramide induced two distinct morphologies of cell fate following C2-ceramide

The anticancer effects of ceramide have been reported in many types of cancers but less in lung cancer. In this study, we used C2-ceramide to further investigate its possible anticancer effects and mechanisms on non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) H1299

Interleukin-1beta (IL-1beta) is overproduced in human and rodent epileptogenic tissue and it exacerbates seizures upon brain application in rodents. Moreover, pharmacological prevention of IL-1beta endogenous synthesis, or IL-1 receptor blockade, mediates powerful anticonvulsive actions indicating a significant role of this
