General description

Ginseng comprises of saponins called ginsenosides, acidic polysaccharides and polyphenolic compounds.

Application

American ginseng (Panax quinquefolium) was used to test its protective effects against mitomycin C induced micronuclei in mice. It is used to test the adaptogenic and anti-amnesic properties of evolvulus alsinoides in rodents.
Ginseng root from Panax quinquefolium (American ginseng) has been used as control in hyperlocomotor activity studies and adaptogenic activity screening in mice.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Ginseng is an effective immune modulator and improves phagocytic functionality of macrophages and stimulates natural killer cells. Ginseng elicits anticancer and anti-diabetic functionality. Ginseng may provide protection in neurodegenerative diseases like Parkinson′s disease and Alzheimer′s disease.
