General description
Histones are highly basic chromatin proteins. They tightly organize eukaryotic DNA into nucleosomes. A nucleosome exists as an octameric core histone comprising a tetramer of histones H3 and H4 with two dimers of histones H2A and H2B, wherein the 147 DNA base pairs are wrapped around the histone complex.
Application
Histone H2B human has been used in far western blot analysis.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Histones are known to regulate the accessibility of DNA during transcription, DNA replication, DNA repair, and recombination. Extrachromosomal histone H2B functions as a cytosolic sensor and detects the double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) fragments produced from infectious agents or damaged cells. This stimulates innate and acquired immune responses in different cell types. Histone H2B moves in and out of the nucleosome more quickly than other core histones.
