Application

3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase human has been used:

Biochem/physiol Actions

3-Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase/HMGCR serves as a rate limiting enzyme in mevalonate pathway. It also controls the oncogenic Hippo transducers TAZ/YAP. HMGCR also perform as a genetic modifier for Alzheimer′s disease (AD).
Hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl-CoA reductase catalyzes the committed step in cholesterol biosynthesis.

Physical properties

Consists of the HMG CoA reductase catalytic domain fused to GST protein.

Unit Definition

One unit will convert 1.0 μmole of NADPH to NADP+ per minute at 37 °C.

Biosynthesis of cholesterol generally takes place in the endoplasmic reticulum of hepatic cells and begins with acetyl- CoA, which is mainly derived from an oxidation reaction in the mitochondria. Acetyl-CoA and acetoacetyl-CoA are converted to 3-hydroxy- 3-methylglutaryl-CoA (HMG-CoA) by HMG-CoA synthase.
