General description

CBX5 (chromobox homolog 5) is a chromosomal protein consisting of a N-terminal chromodomain and a C-terminal chromo shadow domain connected with an unstructured hinge region.

Application

Biochem/physiol Actions

CBX5 (chromobox homolog 5) is involved in the regulation of DNA mediated cellular processes such as DNA damage repair, chromatin plasticity, centromere dynamics, and transcription promoting accurate cell division. It plays a vital role in assembly of chromatin structures by directly binding to lysine 9-methylated histone H3 (H3K9me), a hallmark of heterochromatin. Before binding, it identifies the histone dimethylation and trimethylation of Lys-9 via its chromodomain.
