General description

C-Phycocyanin is a protein pigment, that is soluble in water. It is an important constituent of Spirulina platensis.

Application

C-Phycocyanin from Spirulina sp. has been used:
  • as a standard to characterize the fluorescence interactions and oxidation behaviors for model compounds
  • as a standard to confirm the antibacterial activity
  • to characterize the recombinantly expressed α-subunit of C-phycocyanin from Synechocystis sp. PCC6803 (HisCPC)
  • to identify the phycocyanin from water extracted Spirulina maxima sample

Biochem/physiol Actions

C-phycocyanin, a biliprotein with antioxidant properties, was shown to induce apoptosis in HeLa cells by stimulating expression of pro-apoptotic genes as well as by inducing increased release of cytochrome c from the mitochondria.
C-phycocyanin can act as an active inhibitor of A53Tα-synuclein. It possess anti-inflammatory properties.
