General description
Parathyroid hormone (PTH) is a circulating hormone secreted from the parathyroid gland. This hormone is synthesized as a pre-pro hormone. PTH is composed of binding regions that have a high affinity to a receptor and functional domains that interact with the receptors to initiate an intracellular signaling cascade.
Application
Parathyroid hormone human has been used to incubate mature human adipocytes.
Biochem/physiol Actions
Parathyroid hormone (PTH) exerts its effects on bone and kidney cells. This hormone plays a role in calcium homeostasis. PTH is secreted from the chief cells of the parathyroid gland in response to low extracellular calcium levels or higher levels of extracellular phosphate. PTH deficiency or excess PTH are associated with hypoparathyroidism and hyperparathyroidism, respectively.
