General description

A non-interferon-inducing, broad spectrum antiviral nucleoside that is active against RSV, HIV, HCV and other infectious agents. Inhibits the growth of human myeloma 8226 cells (IC50 = 40 µM) and ovarian carcinoma OVCAR-5 cells (IC50 = 35 µM). Its metabolite, ribavirin-5′-phosphate, inhibits inosine monophosphate (IMP) dehydrogenase. Antiviral effects of Ribavirin can be reversed by depriving infected cells of methionine or isoleucine.
