Application

Cytidine 5′-diphosphocholine (CDP-choline) is generated by choline-phosphate cytidylyltransferase EC 2.7.7.15 in support of the synthesis of phosphatidylcholine. CDP-choline is being used in studies of its affects on neurorecovery.
Cytidine 5′-diphosphocholine sodium salt hydrate has been used as a component of the mixture during the ribonucleotide reductase (RNR) assay in mouse primary pancreatic acinar cells.

Biochem/physiol Actions

Cytidine 5′-diphosphocholine (CDP-choline) is an endogenous compound that plays an important role in the synthesis of phospholipids in the cell membrane. It acts as a choline donor for the biosynthesis of acetylcholine and phosphatidylcholine, a neuronal membrane phospholipid. CDP-choline enhances brain metabolism and influences the levels of various neurotransmitters including dopamine, epinephrine, and acetylcholine. It has been studied as a neuroprotectant after cerebral ischemia. CDP-choline is observed to exhibit therapeutic effects against cognitive impairment arising from multiple causes, cerebral vascular diseases, after-head trauma, and Alzheimer′s disease.
