Gene Information

human ... SDC4(6385)

General description

The SDC-4 (syndecan-4) gene encodes a membrane-spanning proteoglycan which can bear heparan sulfate and chondroitin sulfate chains. Syndecan-4 is predominantly expressed on smooth muscle cells, epithelial cells and cardiomyocytes. The SDC-4 gene is mapped to human chromosome 20q13.12. Anti-Syndecan4 antibody detects endogenous levels of total syndecan-4 protein.

Immunogen

The antiserum was produced against synthesized peptide derived from human Syndecan4.

Immunogen Range: 145-194

Biochem/physiol Actions

Syndecan-4 (SDC-4) is associated with bone development and osteogenesis by regulating fibroblast growth factor-2 (FGF2). SDC-4 gene expression promotes cell division, migration and adhesion. It is essential for wound healing and takes part in inflammation and fibrosis. An abnormal SDC-4 expression is observed in response to stress and metastatic tumor. Growth factors such as FGF2, TNF-α (tumor necrosis factor α) and TGF-β (transforming growth factor β) also tend to alter SDC-4 expression. It is implicated as a biomarker in cardiovascular disease.
